Huntsmen Need to Ramp It Up

Last week the Huntsmen EHL Team had an important two game series against the Philadelphia Little Flyers. The Premier Team only had one game as they hosted the New Jersey 87s.

EHL vs Little Flyers (Wed)

The Little Flyers started off hot and went up 2-0 in the 1st period. Xavier Tremblay put the Huntsmen on the board with his 7th goal of the season. David Cook led a two on one rush, slid the puck to Tremblay who scored at 14:29, Mirigliano credited with the secondary assist. Late in the 1st, the Little Flyers scored on the power play, which became a theme, and took a 3-1 lead. Trevor Rissor netted his 1st goal of the year in the 2nd period. Cooper Walling sent the puck behind the net to Devin England. England found Rissor in front to cut the deficit and make it 3-2 at 9:33. It seemed like Tremblay scored his second goal of the game, but it was waived off due to the net being off. After that, the Huntsmen didn't recover, and the Little Flyers took over. Philadelphia scored three goals in less than two minutes at the end of the 2nd. The Huntsmen found themselves in penalty trouble and 2-3 goals were on the power play for the Little Flyers. At the end of the period, it was 6-2. In the 3rd the Little Flyers scored their 4th power play goal of the day, and then tacked on one more in the final minute and the Little Flyers won 8-2. Alex Illus went 21-27 before being pulled for Andrew Knox 19-21.

EHL at Little Flyers (Sat)

Enzo Giuliani notched his 9th goal of the season in the final minute of the 1st period. Giuliani skated into the offensive zone and fired from the faceoff circle to give the Huntsmen a 1-0 lead. Arendes and Cisar were credited with the assists. The Little Flyers tied the game at 5:19 of the 2nd period. A few minutes later, David Cook regained the lead for the Huntsmen. Philadelphia was leaving their own zone, but Cook deflected the pass. Xavier Tremblay stopped the puck before it went out and he set up Cook for his 13th of the year. In the 3rd, the Little Flyers tied the game in the opening minute. Philadelphia took a 3-2 lead with a power play goal. Eddie Mirigliano tied the game with his 9th goal of the year going top shelf glove side. Quinn Visokey and David Cook had the assists. In overtime the Huntsmen were shorthand with a five on three disadvantage. PA actually killed off the penalties, but the Little Flyers scored before the players can get back to defend and lost 4-3.

Premier vs 87s (Fri)

The 1st period moved quickly, and New Jersey had a 1-0 lead. The 87s took a 2-0 lead near the midway point of the 2nd period. The Huntsmen had a power play but were unable to hit the scoresheet. PA had two more power play chances but were unable to crack the 87s and lost 2-0.

The battle for a playoff spot continues for the Huntsmen as they are on the outside looking in. They did gain one point in the overtime loss but need to turn things around quickly. Every game from here on out will have to be treated like a playoff game. Next up, two games against Philadelphia Hockey Club. The last meeting was a few weeks ago and PHC won in overtime 3-2.  Philadelphia is coming off a split series against the New Jersey 87s with a 5-3 loss and 5-2 win. PHC has been stacking points in January, collecting at least 1 point in 4-5 games. Overall PHC is 3rd in the division 16-11-3 with 35 points. After the overtime loss, the Huntsmen are 12-14-3 with 27 points. The Little Flyers are 2 points ahead of the Huntsmen for the final playoff spot in the South Division.

               Premier

This weekend, the Huntsmen will take on the New Jersey Renegades and the Union Jr. Thunder. The Renegades are just ahead of the Huntsmen in the division at 10-13-3 with 23 points. This will be the 4th head-to-head and the Huntsmen are 3-0. Every game between these teams has 4-3 final scores, two of them were shootout wins for PA.
